Age of AI is a web-based educational game designed to introduce AI concepts to novice learners through engaging gameplay. The game involves completing quests that gradually introduce fundamental machine learning and AI principles, including algorithm training, its impact on outcomes, and various algorithm types like neural networks and decision trees. Players also learn about dataset suitability and metrics like accuracy, precision, and recall.
In the game, the character, FEI, wakes up in a unfamiliar environment. And she has a goal to find lost Dr.Alan. Her suit is equipped with AI powered systems such as equipments management. However, her systems are not working correctly in this unfamiliar environment. So she needs to find and understand the problems with AI such as overfitting to fix them and use her equipments.
The game features three diverse worlds, combining educational elements with engaging gameplay aspects like crafting and combat. I took part in every part of the game including design, world-building, environment design, story development, UI/UX, and dialogue writing, alongside my primary responsibilities in game development. In the beginning, I was working with a team but later on, I continued to developed this game as a only designer and developer. I also make sure that the AI concepts we teach to the beginner users is easily understandable.
I am developing this game at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) under the guidance of Prof. Ning Wang. Initially starting as a summer intern, I was excited to continue into the fall semester as a student researcher. This opportunity has allowed me to deepen my exploration of using games as an educational tool to enhance understanding of AI concepts.
Our paper abstract "Becoming Fei: An Educational Game for AI and Data Science Education for Novice Learners," has been accepted at the HCI International Conference 2025.
